The North Warwickshire market town of Coleshill lies on the River Cole just 11 miles east of Birmingham and was once an Iron Age settlement. It later became a Roman settlement and they built a temple on nearby Grimstock Hill. The earliest record of racing in the town was on Tuesday 9th October 1711 when a Give and Take race was organised on Coleshill Heath, with entries made at the Swan Inn. Despite its prominent location and proximity to Birmingham, the only other occasion racing was noted in the town was on Wednesday 3rd March 1847, and even then the races might not have taken place because no results were reported in the press. Although a form of racing did take place later, it was of an inferior nature and often included ponies.

The only recorded meeting in the initial phase of racing in the town took place on Wednesday 3rd March 1847.
